The Masters will be treated like a second-class citizen by CBS if the final round goes long or a playoff is needed.
Sports Business Daily is reporting that CBS would not cut into its NFL coverage on Sunday if that were to happen, and the Masters would instead be moved to ABC with CBS announcers and production crew. Additionally, CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com and Masters.com also would carry live coverage.
With that said, it is still likely the tournament ends in time. The schedule was built with an hour space before the start of the 4 p.m. NFL games. They are Bills-Cardinals, Broncos-Raiders and Chargers-Dolphins.
“We do have quite a bit of pad in between the final putt and when NFL football starts,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said this week on a conference call. “But we’ll be ready and we’ll work with our partners as we always do and figure it out.”
The major golf tournament is usually the first of the year, but this season it is the last, moved from April to November due to COVID-19. Initially held in 1934, the Masters has never previously been played outside of April.
